WRAP-UP OF LESSON #1:
STEREOTYPES AND PERCEPTIONS
In this lesson we have explored a number of issues related to the concept of disability. Following are a few of the highlights:
- Stereotypes are the assumptions that we make about an individual or a group of people based on our prior personal experiences, the media (i.e. television, internet, newspapers, and magazines), and the influence of friends and family. We are often unaware of our stereotypical views of people and how our views become judgments that affect our interactions with people.
- When we think of people who differ from us, such as people with disabilities, it is important to be aware of the stereotypes or assumptions we believe that may diminish their abilities and limit our ability to appreciate them as individuals.
Next we will learn more about how we view disability in Lesson #2.
